The Gunners failed to make an impression on rivals after a goalless draw with Newcastle. Arsenal finished the match with ten men after the controversial sending off of debutant Gervinho. The Ivorian was shown a straight red after he was confronted by Joey Barton after which Gervinho lost his cool and slapped Barton in the head. Barton managed to escape with only a yellow card despite initially provoking Gervinho.
